RUNNING DOWN LOBS - Gerri Viant
Platform Tennis Magazine

Running down the lob is a transition shot. If you try to hit a winner, you'll make too many mistakes. Instead, look to find gaps in your opponents' teamwork as they come to the net. If the opponents come charging up on the net, the lob will be a very effective shot. If they are the casual type and wait to see if their lob is in before taking the net, the drive could be a good choice. As long as you1ve put your team in a position to play one more shot, you're playing smart paddle!

The lob has gone over my head, and I opted to let the lob bounce
I have turned sideways and set my paddle down and open at my waist
I keep my eyes on the ball always
Gerri can hold her net position if our opponents stay back

The ball was in and our opponents took the net. Gerri retreated to the back court
By facing the play, if the next shot is hit into Gerri’s corner, she will be ready
I position close to the back screen so the ball plays out between the net and me
My contact point is waist height and just ahead of my left foot
With the ball in front of me, I have options. If our opponents are slow or casual, I could drive off of the screen. If an opponent is running in too close to the net, I can see this and lob him
I might even be able to regain the net for our team
Here I opted to lob
My wrist remains firm and the follow through is over my head
Legs and shoulders will give me the height
We will now work the point from the backcourt. Two happy little clams!
